The New Orleans Saints came into the game against the Green Bay Packers with something to prove. Up until that game, the Saints had not been able to win two games back-to-back, giving them a 5-5 record. During week 11, they topped the Kansas City Chiefs 30-20. The Packers were also coming off of a big win and were looking to keep themselves tied atop the NFC North. Not helping matters any, the Saints would again be without running back Reggie Bush who has been out after surgery on a torn meniscus, yet was listed as questionable before the game. The Saints rallied and not only won, but did it convincingly with a score of 51-29. The score also made the record books in the NFL as it pushed the league total of points scored over 800 for the first time ever.
The game wasn't just record breaking for the NFL. Running Back Deuce McAllister set a franchise record by scoring the 54th touchdown of his career. Another man with a great game was Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Brees was 20 of 26 for 323 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions and a passer rating of 157.5. The game marks another top performance by Brees as talk starts to crop up about him breaking an incredible record: the single season passing record. The record is currently held by none other than the legendary Dan Marino, who set it in 1984 with 5,084 yards. So far, Brees has amassed 3,574 yards, and all he has to do is continue with the same yardage he has averaged so far this season. Brees, however, says he is more focused on getting his team within a fighting chance of a playoff run than breaking any records.
In the game against the Packers, the first half of the game showed two teams fighting hard for the lead. Green Bay took the lead first with a one-yard touchdown run by John Kuhn in the first quarter. Brees threw his first 70-yard touchdown pass not long after to Lance Moore to tie the game. Pierre Thomas gave the Saints their first lead later in the first quarter with a four-yard touchdown run. Aaron Rodgers connected with Greg Jennings on a seven-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14 early in the second quarter. Moore caught another touchdown pass to take the lead before Aaron Rodgers answered back with a rushing touchdown of his own. With only seconds left in the half, the Saints took the lead off of a 30-yard field goal by Garrett Hartley.
After the half, the Saints asserted their dominance by scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter, one of which was McAllister's score off of a three-yard run. The Packers added seven more with a touchdown early in the fourth. Pierre Thomas grabbed his second touchdown to round out the scoring for the game. In their quest for the playoffs, three of the New Orleans' final five games are away. Be a part of the action with New Orleans Saints tickets.
