On Saturday, January 24, 2009, the Miss America Pageant will be airing on television on TLC, but even more exciting will be the live show. Many of us think of the Miss America pageant as being simple beautycontest, but there is more to it than that. The pageant is an opportunity for the young ladies to win cash prizes and scholarships, as well as giving them an opportunity to display their unique talents to the world. The assistance is not only given to the young women who win the title of Miss America, but also the more than 12,000 women who compete in the state and local competitions.

There are also National Grants and Awards offered through State and Local Miss America programs, these include the Miss America Scholar Award and the Miss America Community Service Scholarship. The scholarship award is given to women pursuing academic excellence who are able to win the award by competing at a state level. The community service award is given to a contestant who exhibits exemplary community service initiatives.
The Miss America Pageant is one that strives to bring forward a young woman capable of being a leader in important social causes, her purpose is to represent high ideals, and be an example of beauty grace and intelligence. The first Miss America was Margaret Gorman, who won the title at the end of her year in 1921. Over the years Miss America winners have played a key role in our nation, most notably during WW II when the contestants all took their responsibility seriously, serving their country by touring war-time factories, selling war bonds, and touring with the USO.
It is often a fact that Americans outside the pageant see the excitement of the pageant winners as a little hysterical, when we are only aware of the beauty part of the contest. But remember that winning the contest means much, much more, it is often an opportunity to pay off the rest of college and to be influential in the world in ways that are rarely open to women at such a young age.
